Exploitation of Women in Advertising. This essay will seek to define how advertising in Western society exploits women for the sake of selling products. The objective is to demonstrate how print advertisements make this phenomenon transparently clear. There are certain stereotypical portrayals of women in advertisements. These are designed to sell products as well as to send certain values to the culture. The paper will argue that capitalism, which is the buffer to the advertising industry, needs to define and control the desires of its consumers. Thus, the focus will be on how certain cultural values, on which capitalism is built, need to be taught to the consumers of the society. Advertisers, therefore, need to shape as well as attract the tastes of consumers. Advertisements that include women, in other words, reinforce and justify the cultural values of female subservience -- a subservience that capitalism demands. 14 pgs. bibliography lists 8 sources.
